🌱Animal Rights Protest Over Laurel Park + UMD Roy Rogers Opens

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Laurel.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, people of Laurel! It's me again, Alexis Goring, your host of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sun. High: 54 Low: 30.

Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. Animal rights activists gathered outside of Laurel Park to protest Saturday. Racing has been suspended after eight horses died in the past two weeks. The horses developed injuries and had to be euthanized. Horseracing Wrongs (a group of activists) are advocating for the animals and calling for help nationwide. (CBS Baltimore)
  2. Dr. Monica Goldson, Chief Executive Officer for Prince George's County Public Schools, recently unveiled a $2.6 billion proposed budget for fiscal year 2023. It focuses on educational and operational improvement for PGCPS through transformation, equity and innovation. The FY 2023 Proposed Annual Operating Budget proposal reflects Board of Education budget priorities, supports the PGCPS Transformation 2026 Strategic Plan and addresses strategies for closing funding shortfalls based on the nearly 9,000-student gap in projected and actual enrollment. (PGCPS)
  3. Roy Rogers, a popular fast food chain, opened its newest location earlier this month in the Stamp Student Union food court inside the University of Maryland College Park campus. The eatery offers a full menu of roast beef, burgers and chicken. (WTOP)
  4. Governor Larry Hogan recently announced that, according to official CDC data, 90% of all Marylanders 18 and older have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This is a major milestone for the state's vaccination campaign. Gov. Hogan said, the state is "very focused on getting the remaining unvaccinated individuals vaccinated." (Maryland.gov)
