BSU's Grant Funds $10K Scholarships For STEM Majors + COVID News

Happy Friday, Laurel! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in Laurel today.

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Bowie State University is an active participant in a new initiative that joins 28 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Strada Education Network, which is a nonprofit social impact organization dedicated to increasing individuals' economic mobility by fostering more purposeful connections between education and work. The initiative, powered by an initial $25 million grant from Strada, is designed to support the work of HBCUs in developing the next generation of leaders. (bowiestate.edu)
  2. Bowie State University, one of Maryland's historically Black universities, is part of a new collaborative partnership with BGE to provide scholarships to students in STEM majors. BSU will receive a $200,000 grant to fund $10,000 scholarships to 15 full-time STEM majors through the BGE Scholars Program. Scholars will participate in career enriching activities with BGE mentors, internships and job shadowing opportunities. (bowiestate.edu)
  3. Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks recently announced updates regarding the county's COVID-19 response and vaccination efforts, including an expansion of the county's indoor mask mandate to include children ages 2-5, effective immediately. Residents and visitors over the age of 2 are now required to wear masks in all indoor public venues and businesses in Prince George's County. (City of Laurel)
  4. In honor of her mother-in-law, Lisa Goodwin who is a resident of Prince George's County, began donating "chemo care packages" to Chesapeake Oncology Hematology Associates in Annapolis. Goodwin never got to meet her mother-in-law (Hazel Goodwin) because she died of breast cancer before Goodwin and her husband met. Now, Goodwin donates chemo care packages in Hazel's honor. (WTOP)
