Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- According to Patch reporter Kristin Danley-Greiner, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Harriet Tubman's birth, Governor Larry Hogan has proclaimed 2022 "The Year of Harriet Tubman." Many activities are being offered to celebrate Tubman who, after liberating herself from slavery when she was 27, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad in Maryland. She helped hundreds of other enslaved people flee the South to freedom, earning herself the name "The Moses of Her People."(Patch)
- If you've been hoping to adopt a pet, look no further than these Laurel area animal shelters. Patch worked with Petfinder to compile this week's list of animals available for adoption near you. Whether you're looking for cuddles or companionship, one of these animals could be the perfect fit for your family. (Laurel Patch)
- Governor Larry Hogan recently announced that the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) has donated 50 Astral portable ventilators to treat patients at front line hospitals in Ukraine. The ventilators will support the treatment of children and adults who have been wounded during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "The State of Maryland continues to stand in solidarity with President Zelensky and the people of Ukraine," said Gov. Hogan. "We are proud to make this donation to help save lives and aid the Ukrainains in the fight against Russian aggression." (Maryland.gov)
