Happy Saturday, Laurel! Here's everything you need to know to get this day started. Here's what's going on today in Laurel.
First, today's weather:
Warmer with clouds and sun. High: 59 Low: 48.
Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- According to Patch reporter Kristin Danley-Greiner, a nationwide "grandparent scam" is negatively affecting residents of Prince George's County. Since Jan. 20, the county police department has received several reports of this scam and in two of those cases, the scammers swindled victims out of thousands of dollars. In many "grandparent scam" cases, the suspect calls an elderly victim, pretending to be one of the senior's grandchildren. They say that their grandchild was involved in a serious accident. The scammer gives the victim a phone number for a lawyer and then ends the phone call. The victim contacts the fake lawyer who attempts to convince them to a pay large amount of cash in order to help their grandchild. (Patch)
- According to Patch reporter Elizabeth Janney, a convoy of truckers and its supporters are headed to Maryland. Schools, police and businesses are making plans based on the potential for several groups to come together in western Maryland before embarking this weekend to Washington, D.C. (Patch)
- U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge recently met with elected officials from the D.C. region to discuss ways the federal government can help address housing shortages and increase affordable housing development. Fudge led a roundtable discussion at the Lewis, which is a brand new affordable housing complex for seniors located at the Towne Square at Suitland Federal Center, in Prince George's County. (WTOP)
