Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- On Sept. 14, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission opened the applications for legal sports betting licenses in the 17 locations named in Maryland's sports betting law. Applications for the 30 Class B licenses for retail locations and the 60 mobile sports betting licenses will not be accepted until the regulations governing them are finalized. (BestUSCasinos.org)
- Cassandra Baker, a 14-year-old girl, went missing on Saturday and the Laurel Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding her. Baker's mother told police that her daughter ran away about 4:00 p.m. Baker was last seen in the 14700 block of Fourth Street. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department or Detective Ashley Swidarski at 301-498-0092, ext. 1146 or email aswidarski@laurel.md.us. (CBS Baltimore)
- Team Hanley's Captain Bombastic pulled away from Grade 1 winner Roadster down the stretch to win the $100,000 Polynesian Saturday at Laurel Park. Captain Bombastic's victory was his first under the shadow of Hall of Famer Asmussen. Captain Bombastic covered the mile in 1:36.11, winning by a length over Cordmaker, who was disqualified from second and placed sixth for interference down the stretch. (Paulick Report)
- Mike Smith, a 56-year old jockey who enjoys a Hall of Fame Career, has traveled around the world. His most recent stop was Laurel Park. He was in town on Sept. 18 with three mounts on the $200,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) program led by Grade 1 winner Roadster in the $100,000 Polynesian for 3-year-olds and up. This event was Smith's first time at Laurel since winning the Barbara Fritchie Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) on Feb. 17, 2007. Smith is a career winner of 5,623 races and more than $336 million in purse earnings. He owns a 32-6-6-4 lifetime record at Laurel with $823,190 in purses earned. (Past The Wire)
- Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker III's wife, Christa Beverly, who was a civil rights lawyer, died Saturday at the age of 61. While the cause of death was not given, the Baltimore Sun noted that Beverly had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for many years. She was diagnosed in 2010 with early onset dementia. Prior to her death, Beverly was the closest political adviser to her husband who is well-known in Maryland politics. (Baltimore Sun)
