Clear throughout the day. High: 83 Low: 61.

Here are the top three stories today in Laurel:

  1. Governor Larry Hogan today announced on Sept. 3 that he has appointed Judge Steven B. Gould to the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court. Gould will fill the seat being vacated by Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera, who will retire on September 10. Gov. Hogan also announced that he has designated Judge Joseph M. Getty as the new chief judge of the Court of Appeals, effective September 11. (Maryland.gov)
  2. The Delta variant is still surging in Maryland during this Labor Day weekend. As of Sept. 3, the state's testing positivity rate was 4.89%. Dr. Christine Baker, a family practice physician at Ascension St. Agnes says if you're unvaccinated, don't travel this weekend. If you're vaccinated, Dr. Baker says, you might have a little more leeway in your Labor Day plans. But travel can be risky if you have unvaccinated kids. (WYPR)
  3. The Delta variant continues to claim lives across the United States. Officials say that they are keeping a "very close eye" on a new variant that may be able to bypass existing coronavirus antibodies. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on Thursday that the U.S. is taking the variant "very seriously," but that it hasn't taken an extensive hold in this country.
