Dr. Deidra Crews Joins National Kidney Foundation of Maryland Board
Accomplished Hopkins nephrologist previously received an All-Star Award from NKF-MD
LUTHERVILLE, Md. −The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland (NKF-MD) has elected Deidra C. Crews, MD, ScM, to a three-year term on its board of directors.
A nephrologist and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she chairs the Department of Medicine Diversity Council, is a core faculty member of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research and is an associate faculty member of the Center on Aging and Health.
Her core area of research addresses disparities in the care and outcomes of chronic kidney disease. She has examined the contribution of social determinants of health, including poverty and access to healthful foods, to disparities in kidney disease. Her work in end-stage renal disease includes studies of the optimal timing and setting of dialysis initiation among vulnerable groups, and patient preparation for the start of renal replacement therapy.

In addition to being the inaugural Gilbert S. Omenn Anniversary Fellow of the Institute of Medicine, she chairs the American Society of Nephrology Chronic Kidney Disease Advisory Group and serves on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Chronic Kidney Disease Surveillance Team.
NKF-MD previously honored her with its Greater Baltimore Community and Patients Service Committee All-Star Award for volunteering and promoting screenings for kidney disease to the public, presenting a lunch & learn event about kidney disease, representing the Foundation through media interviews, and serving on various committees and subcommittees.

After earning her medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completing her internship and residency in internal medicine on the Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital, she received a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr. Crews resides in Laurel with her husband, Darrell Aus, and their daughter, Charlotte.
