Experience What Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Is Like

To be more than just average, the extraordinary must be done. And those who master Brazilian Jiu-jitsu are a different kind of breed.

Until you step on the mat, you really have no idea what the experience can do for you.

I remember many years ago when got swept up in the MMA craze. The second season of the Ultimate Fighter was being shown one episode after another on Spike. And at the time, I was overweight. In fact, there was a time when I stepped on the scale and saw 3 9 2.

But I had always had a desire to learn martial arts so I finally decided to just do it, and I found an awesome gym. Even then though, I just wanted to hit things, and it took almost a year for me to finally decide to give Jiu-jitsu a try.

That was a decision I have never once regretted.

And now there is no doubt that I am far better person than I once was, and everywhere I go carry weapons in my arsenal.

But the art isn't easy. It requires that you learn new movement patterns, and you may struggle (I know I did).

The trade-off is that as you learn, you become more awesome physically and mentally.
Here are some reasons why that’s true:

  1. Moving your body in many different patterns both with and without a partner will test your cardio and improve your overall fitness.
  2. The greater demands for balance and stability in a variety of positions will strengthen your core.
  3. You will strengthen your ability to be calm under pressure because you’ll have to deal with pressure and discomfort countless times in practice.
  4. Your confidence in your ability to defend yourself will increase because you’ll gain an intuitive understanding of how fragile the human body is.
  5. You’ll improve your critical skills as you solve problems on the mat everyday with physical exertion and mental acuity.

So if you’re looking for an art that is fun, healthy and may save your life, consider Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
