Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen recently emphasized his support for legislation called the "Easy Enrollment in Health Care Act." Its goal is to address disparities in health care coverage by making it easier for the uninsured to enroll in a qualified plan. It is based on a Maryland law that was enacted last year. Health care advocates joined the senator in touting the legislation. (MarylandReporter.com)
- Bowie State University quarterback Ja'rome Johnson has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week. Johnson completed 14 of 25 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 13 times for 51 yards and two more scores as the Bulldogs won their sixth consecutive game, 51-44 over Virginia State, this past Saturday. - The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department recently awarded a work-related donation to the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department. The donation is 1999 American La France 2250 GPM, 4-Guys stainless steel rescue body pumper. The Hawkins County Volunteer Firefighters Association received the donated pumper from the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department on Friday (Oct. 15). (Therogersvillereview)
- Howard County police responded to a call about an armed man near the Mall at Columbia on Friday night. The police were called to a parking lot near the Lidl store at the mall, where Tyquan Malik Jenkins of Laurel was located. Reports alleged that Jenkins had a gun. The police used rubber bullets to disorient him without injuring him, and took him into custody. (Fox Baltimore)
- Improved access to job training and good-paying jobs will be available for Prince George's County residents when the Labor Department's first American Job Center comes to the National Harbor branch at Tanger Outlets. The American Job Center at National Harbor opens Oct. 25. It involves a federal, state and local partnership that also includes local businesses and nonprofits. (WTOP)

- Ready 2 Read Storytime for Ages 3-5 (Nearby Laurel) — This event will take place in Greenbelt. (12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.)
- Auricular Acupuncture at MUIH Main Campus (CHI Site) — Master's level acupuncture students, under supervision by licensed and experienced faculty, are providing safe and effective auricular treatments. Limit: Six participants per seating to ensure a safe, physically distanced, and peaceful experience. (5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)
- Wednesday Weekly Group Ride / Meetup (Nearby Laurel) — Every Wednesday, Motorcyclist Meetup & Ride will get together. All skill levels and motorcycle types are welcome to join. There will be a group ride, weather-permitting. (6:30 p.m.)
