Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. Yesterday, Governor Larry Hogan issued a statement after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gave final approval for Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and 'mix and match' COVID-19 booster shots. Gov. Hogan said that booster shots provide additional protection for vulnerable people. According to Gov. Hogan, state health officials are authorizing providers to make Moderna and Johnson & Johnson booster shots available to eligible recipients. Maryland has now administered more than 250,000 booster shots.(Maryland.gov)
  2. Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) partnered with American College of Education (ACE) to celebrate National School Bus Safety Week (Oct. 18-22) in honor of the men and women who help transport nearly 90,000 students to school each day. PGCPS and ACE honored them for their integral role ensuring safety inside and outside of school buses. Yesterday, ACE randomly selected five drivers to receive $50 gift cards. All drivers nominated by the learning community were entered into a grand prize drawing for a chance to win $1,000. (PGCPS.org)
  3. A trailer located on the parking lot of the First United Methodist Church in Hyattsville, serves a unique and needed purpose: offering the homeless a place to take a hot shower. The mobile shower trailer is owned and operated by the nonprofit The Neighborhood Well. Omolayo Adebayo, the founder and CEO of the organization, said the trailer will operate on the second and fourth Saturday of every month, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (WTOP)
  4. According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Paul Wiedefeld, the Metrorail service will be operating on a delayed schedule through the end of October. Wiedefeld said that people who choose to continue using Metrorail can expect about 15 minutes of wait times between trains. This change in service happened after a Blue Line train derailed in Northern Virginia. (WDVM)
