🌱 Gov. Hogan's Plan For Affordable Housing + Origami Family Fun Day

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Laurel.

(Patch Media)

Get on up, Laurel! Let's get this Tuesday started off right. Here are the most important things going on around Laurel today.

First, today's weather:

Periods of sun. High: 73 Low: 53.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

  1. Avoiding the "One Last Race Syndrome" and knowing when to retire thoroughbred horse racing was the focus of an April 20 presentation by noted equine surgeon Dr. Patty Hogan. The event, held at Laurel Park, offered continuing education credit for trainers and assistant trainers. Hogan said the primary reasons to retire a racehorse are a significant physical issue or a lack of competitiveness. She said retirement to a pasture is not ideal, so transitioning to second careers is important. (Paulick Report)
  2. University of Maryland students are pressuring the college administration to expedite a planned conversion of the campus' fossil-fuel burning power plant. University administrators have already committed to converting the plant in either 2035 or 2050. However, some students don't believe that's a fast enough commitment to zero carbon emissions. "University of Maryland is supposed to be a climate ambassador, but it's really a contradiction when we're powered by a fossil fuel power plant," said Marilyn Yang, a member of the Student Government Association's Sustainability Committee. (WTOP)
  3. Governor Larry Hogan recently announced that more than $200 million in financing tools and new programs will be made available to create new affordable housing opportunities in the state of Maryland. The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development will administer the funds to produce more than 6,000 additional units statewide amid rising construction costs and interest rates.
