Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- A woman is dead after a three-car crash in Prince George's County Monday afternoon, Maryland State Police (MSP) said in a release Tuesday morning. The crash happened just before 3 p.m. on Baltimore Avenue at Ammendale Road in Beltsville, police said. One of the drivers in this accident, 28-year-old Irma Gabriel Saravia Martinez of Laurel, was taken by ambulance to University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, where she died. (WUSA9.com)
- Regulatory hurdles have slowed any chance of launching Maryland sports betting by Sept. 9.
Several steps remain before a launch can happen, starting with the official printing of 200 or so pages of sports betting regulations in an official state listing called the Maryland Register. The regulations were approved by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission on July 15, but had yet to appear in the Register as of Aug. 13. (Gaming Today) - Addiction Medication Clinic has opened its latest treatment clinic in Laurel to offer medication-assisted treatment for individuals battling opioid addiction. - Prince George's County police are trying to bring the community together with pop-up basketball games through an effort called Hoops With a Cop. The first event was held at the Avenue Apartments in Forestville on Monday. Officers and students in the Explorers Program played basketball together in friendly competition. (WTOP)
- County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks announced on Monday that Elizabeth M. Hewlett, a fixture in Prince George's County government for more than two decades, will retire as head of the bi-county Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Hewlett was first appointed by former County Executive Wayne K. Curry in 1995, becoming the first woman and the first African-American to hold the post. (WTOP)
