Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- According to Kristin Danley-Greiner, Patch Staff, City Hall in the Park returns for 2022 and will start with the May 18 city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Residents may pack a snack and grab a lawn chair. Laurel Mayor Craig A. Moe will provide an overview of city projects and activities. City of Laurel management staff, the mayor and members of the City Council will be there to answer residents' questions and take suggestions. (Patch)
- The Prince George's County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint District Heights Mayor Johnathan M. Medlock to fill a vacant seat on the 11-member body. Medlock has served as mayor since July 2020. He will replace former Council member Derrick Leon Davis, who resigned on April 15. Medlock would serve the remaining seven months of Davis' term that expires in December to represent District 6. (The Washington Informer)
- Governor Larry Hogan recently announced a new partnership between the Office of Immigrant Affairs and 211 Maryland to expand multilingual access to services and support, including reporting hate crimes and finding resources for victims. "This new partnership with 211 Maryland is an important collaboration to overcome language barriers in serving everyone who calls Maryland home and who works to make great contributions to our state," said Gov. Hogan. "It will further expand our outreach and resources to make it easier to report hate crimes and connect victims with services." (Maryland.gov)

- Child Loss Grief Support Group (in person and virtual)—This support group will meet both in-person and virtually. This group is for parents who have experienced the death of a child of any age or circumstance. The group will meet on our Pasadena campus as well as via Zoom for Healthcare on the first Wednesday of the month until June 1. Attendance restrictions and requirements will be updated using the most recent Centers for Disease Control guidelines and organizational policies prior to each event. Childcare will not be provided. Children are not permitted in any of these groups. - 1st Wednesdays Open Mic Night at Busboys and Poets in Baltimore—This event will be hosted by Lady Brio who is an international spoken word artist, poetry coach, activist, organizer, educator and the executive director of the Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts and Entertainment District. She received her B.A. in Communication and Culture from Howard University and her MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Design from the University of Baltimore. During her slam career she has won the 2016 National Poetry Slam, the 2017/2019 Southern Fried Regional Slam, and the 2019 Rustbelt Regional Slam. She was most recently ranked number one female slam poet in the world at Women of the World Poetry Slam in April 2021. Lady Brion also serves on the board for DewMore Baltimore and as the Cultural Curator for a grassroots political think-tank called Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle in Baltimore. - Forró in the Park! Dance, Sing & Mingle (Dupont Circle in NW D.C.)—Learn some new dance moves and warmup with Brazilian Forró at the Dupont Circle fountain every Wednesday evening (weather permitting)! Cody will be teaching at 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., then we dance! No experience necessary! Look for us with the blue picnic blanket and Brazilian flag, facing the digital clock! - 1st Wednesdays Open Mic at Busboys and Poets in Northwest D.C.—This event will be hosted by Anthony Oakes who is from North Carolina. He is a District of Columbia resident who is taking comedy on the East Coast by storm. His clean, yet edgy, southern, intellectual, witty humor will have you reeling with laughter. He has graced the stages of The Broadway, The Westside, and The Greenwich Village Comedy Clubs, in New York City. You can catch him locally at: The DC Drafthouse, The Bier Baron Comedy Loft, The Wonderland Ballroom, and Busboys and Poets. He also produces several comedy shows in the DMV area.
