First, today's weather:
Breezy with periods of rain. High: 51 Low: 42.
Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- The 2022 Main Street Festival and Parade planned for Saturday has been canceled due to the threat of severe weather. A new date has not yet been chosen. City officials said vendors, Main Street merchants and parade participants should direct any questions to the Laurel Board of Trade at Laurelmainstreetfestival@gmail.com. (Laurel Patch)
- Zilla Racing Stables and Acqua Nova Stable's Sugar Gray Leonard, as the 3-year-old colt pulled away from pacesetting stablemate Raise a Speights in the stretch to graduate by 4 ¼ lengths Thursday at Laurel Park. Sugar Gray Leognard was sent off as the 4-5 favorite in the maiden special weight for horses ages 3, 4 and 5. The winning time was 1:24.22 over a main track upgraded from good to fast prior to the race. (Past The Wire)
- Teaching can be fun, inspiring and far from boring for the teachers and the students. Dr. Lynne G. Long, Bowie State University chair of Teaching, Learning and Professional Development in the College of Education, has partnered with Dramatic Results. The program will serve as a demonstration site for STEAM Ecosystem Expansion Demonstration (SEED) project and is funded by a $2 million grant from Assistance for Arts Education. Preservice teachers from BSU's College of Education will be trained to instruct Calvert County middle school students in Gifted and Advanced Learning during summer camps and on Saturdays during the school year.
