🌱 Laurel Native Makes Film About Women's Basketball + Babyface At MGM

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Laurel.

(Patch Media)

Happy Wednesday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather:

Sunny and warmer. High: 59 Low: 41.

Here are the top stories three today in Laurel:

  1. The City of Laurel is celebrating Earth Day Friday, April 22 by announcing a new recycling program that will be good for the environment and good for residents as well as Department of Public Works crews. (City of Laurel)
  2. Laurel native Melanie Page, graduated from college then moved to California and embarked on a career in film. However, the pandemic changed her plans. She returned home to Laurel and volunteered as an assistant coach with her mother's AAU team. As she worked with her mother's players, Page realized the impact basketball had on her life and the lives of players throughout the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) area. As a filmmaker, Page hopes to capture that essence in "Can't Retire From This" which is a four-part documentary series highlighting women's basketball in the DMV, and the role the game plays in uplifting local youth. (Just Women's Sports)
  3. Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds has won 12 Grammys throughout his career. Saturday (April 23) and Sunday (April 24), he will perform live at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill with R&B musician Kem and comedian Sherri Shepherd. During this event, the audience will hear a collection of songs Babyface wrote for others and recorded himself. (WTOP)
