Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:
- According to a news release, the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland announced that the City of Laurel was one of twelve Maryland municipalities honored at the Sustainable Maryland Awards Ceremony at the Maryland Municipal League's annual Fall Conference on Oct. 12. (City of Laurel)
- Thursday, Governor Larry Hogan said Maryland is expanding its clean energy portfolio and will have its first offshore wind fabrication center thanks to a $72 million partnership between a Danish wind company and an eastern shore steel fabrication firm. Gov. Hogan said that this partnership will allow Crystal Steel to increase its workforce by up to a third and power at least 1.3 million homes with renewable energy. (MarylandReporter.com)
- Maryland drivers are breaking the law when they do not move over for vehicles providing roadside assistance or slow down if it is not safe to change lanes. A majority of first responders say motorists are not following the rule. According to a new survey released by AAA Mid-Atlantic, almost 75% of respondents in Maryland (a group that includes police, emergency medical services personnel, tow truck drivers and roadside workers), said drivers are breaking this rule. (CBS Baltimore)
- The level of crime in the D.C. region rose last year, causing police "grave concern." Laurel Police Chief Russell Hamill, the chair of the Police Chief Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, presented the numbers in his committee's annual report. The report found that criminal offenses in the National Capital Region in 2020 were up 8.4% over 2019, with violent crime up 28.6%. (WTOP)
