1. Recently, Maryland lawmakers met to discuss how to better protect kids in the classroom as a new school year starts amid an uptick in Coronavirus cases. 2. One week remains in the $1 million VaxU Scholarship Promotion, an incentive program to encourage 12- to 17-year-olds to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The initiative provides $50,000 scholarships to 20 winners through weekly random drawings. Governor Larry Hogan said that nearly 70% of our 12- to-17-year-olds are vaccinated, which he considers to be a testament to Maryland's vaccination campaign that is leading the nation. He said that there's still time to get vaccinated and qualify for a $50,000 college scholarship. (Maryland.gov)
3. One of Maryland's two competing redistricting commissions held an observation meeting for the first time on August 31. Keisha Morris Desir, census and mass incarceration project manager for Common Cause-Maryland, said it is the first time the state has utilized two separate redistricting commissions, which may lead to a partisan struggle over maps. Desir stressed the importance of having residents speak about the problems of dividing communities into separate legislative districts. (Public News Service)
