(Patch Media)

Up and at 'em, Laurel! It's Thursday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in Laurel.

First, today's weather:

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

  1. Public events and programs, as well as most park facilities, in Prince George's County will be closed beginning Wednesday through Jan. 18. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the county's parks and recreation department made this decision on Tuesday. All parks and trails will remain open. The closures are part of the department's COVID-19 response. (WTOP)
  2. In response to Maryland surpassing 2,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide, Governor Larry Hogan recently provided Marylanders with an update regarding ongoing emergency actions. He said that our "statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations have now reached record levels and surpassed 2,000." He thinks that this surge was driven primarily by unvaccinated patients. Therefore, he wants to to encourage everyone to get vaccinated and get boosted so that they can have a strong defense against this coronavirus and its variants. (Maryland.gov)
