(Patch Media)

Morning, people of Laurel! Alexis Goring here with a fresh edition of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy with a shower in spots. High: 73 Low: 64

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Trainer Jamie Ness will be well-represented when Laurel Park hosts Claiming Crown Preview Day on Sunday (Oct. 10). Ness has five horses entered in four of the five preview races on the eight-race card. The Claiming Crown rewards and pays tribute to the horses and horsemen that provide the foundation for day-to-day racing programs at tracks around the country. (laurelpark.com)
  2. Laurel Police are conducting an investigation into a death at the Laurel Lakes Shopping Center. No other details are available. The shopping center remains open for business. However, parts of the sidewalk will be closed while detectives conduct their investigation. (Twitter)
  3. On Oct. 7, Governor Larry Hogan announced a five-point framework for how Maryland will utilize the $2.5 billion surplus reported last week by the Bureau of Revenue Estimates. The governor's plan will increase Maryland's Rainy Day Fund to at least 7.5% or $1.67 billion, in order to have extra revenue available for potential recessions and future crises. (Maryland.gov)
  4. A crowd of Go-Go music lovers gathered at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Prince George's County on Thursday for an event named "Our Streets, Our Future." D.C. Go-Go music legend Sugar Bear spoke to the crowd with this message: Stop the gun violence. Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy said the musician approached her office with the idea of remembering victims with a concert. Braveboy invited 27 of the county's municipalities to offer services for teens and young adults. (WTOP)
