Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- A multi-vehicle collision in Laurel left a man dead Monday afternoon. Police said the driver of a 2005 Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Route 1 approaching Whiskey Bottom Road just before 2:30 p.m. when the vehicle struck the rear of a 2001 Toyota Sequoia stopped at the red light. The driver of the Corolla was Feliciano Balbuena Lezcano, 51, of Rockville. He was pronounced dead at the scene. (Baltimore Sun)
- Richard Schultz's Radical Right, a 2-year-old homebred gelding, reeled in pacesetter He Gone in deep stretch and edged clear for a half-length victory in Race 3 on Sunday at Laurel Park. The 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight for juveniles marked the first win for Radical Right. Sunday's winning time was 1:02.63 over a firm All Along turf course. (Past The Wire)
- Gov. Larry Hogan recently said that he is not sure what his plans are after the expiration of his current and final term in office in Jan. 2023. Hogan, 65, is Maryland's first two-term Republican governor since the 1950s. He has served as chairman of the National Governors Association and has not ruled out running for president in 2024. Gov. Hogan has said he is not interested in running for U.S. Senate next year. (MarylandReporter.com)
- Teddy the Terp, a chocolate Labrador, is the newest member of the University of Maryland-College Park's police department. Teddy has a special assignment as a comfort K-9. The department recently acquired the 4-month-old pure bred. He will undergo one year of obedience and comfort training to help people dealing with anxiety, depression or trauma. (WTOP)
- Over the next two to three years, some Prince George's County Public School boundaries will be changing. This will likely interest many residents who live in the city of Laurel. Earlier this year, PGCPS released the Draft Boundary Scenarios Report which presents three draft scenarios that offer different approaches to adjusting school boundaries in PGCPS.
