Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- According to Anne Arundel County Police, a pedestrian died from his injuries Friday after he was struck by a car in Laurel. The collision happened the night of October 11. According to police, 49-year-old David Miles was in the westbound lane of Fort Meade Road when he was struck. Miles was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Just over a week later, he died from those injuries. (CBS Baltimore)
- Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory has opened a new research facility at its campus in Laurel with hopes of further enabling collaboration between its analysts and internal and external partners. Building 201 has 263,000 square feet of space. The facility will host over 650 staff members, most of whom will come from APL's long-range research engine Research and Exploratory Development Department. (ExecutiveBiz)
- Recently, Bird Mobberley's Buff My Boots put away Sparkle Sprinkle following a spirited stretch duel and got to the wire ahead of longshot My Thoughts for a front-running half-length victory in the $100,000 Maryland Million Lassie at Laurel Park. Buff My Boots ran six furlongs in 1:11.14 over a fast main track. (Paulick Report)
- Yesterday, kicked off the first day of 2021 Economic Development Week in Maryland. In celebration of this event, each day of this week, an important part of the City of Laurel's economic development initiatives will be highlighted to show the ways in which it contributes to the growth and success of the City of Laurel. - The state of Maryland has achieved 98% of seniors receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, Maryland's COVID-19 health metrics continue to decline across the board. Governor Larry Hogan said, "Maryland's case rate and positivity rate are among the lowest in the country, and they are continuing to drop." Gov. Hogan said that maintaining immunity is critical to keeping our health and economic recovery going. Eligible Marylanders are encouraged to get a booster shot as soon as possible. (Maryland.gov)

- Power Walking — Walking is great for your physical and mental health. Learn how to establish a walking routine and connect with others who have similar fitness goals. Participants can walk at their own pace. This event will take place at Fairland Regional Park. (8:00 a.m.)

- City of Laurel - Government: The official ballot boxes are out for Laurel City Council elections. One is at the Laurel Municipal Center at 8103 Sandy Spring Road. The other is at the Robert J DiPietro Community Center at 7901 Cypress Street. Put your absentee ballots there now.
