Maryland City Elementary Earns High Marks For Wellness Initiative

Maryland City Elementary is being lauded for its commitment to enhancing the wellness of its students, student families, school staff and even the community.

The school has won the Anne Arundel County Public School's Wellness School of Distinction Award, reports ABC Baltimore.

The award recognizes schools that demonstrate a high priority for the health and well-being of students, staff, and school support­ers by going beyond the curriculum to produce positive outcomes for the entire school community, according to the AACPS website.

“We are honored and beside ourselves,” Principal Karen Soneira said in a statement.  “We didn’t do all this work just for the award, but it means so much to know that we’re on the right track.”

The school has made a push to incorporate wellness and fitness into its curriculum by using outdoor classrooms and raising thousands of dollars for health causes, even hosting family fitness nights.
