Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:
- Rob Minnick, president of Minnick's, a family owned, HVAC company, recently announced an indoor air quality initiative as a way to raise awareness and health in the community during National IAQ Month. (WFMZ Allentown)
- Maryland State Police announced that effective January 1, 2022, the state will increase the starting pay of trooper candidates by 45%. In response, Governor Larry Hogan said, "We are taking the first step in implementing our $150 million Re-Fund The Police Initiative by ensuring that we offer more competitive salaries to the troopers who will be putting their lives on the line every day to keep the rest of us safe." Gov. Hogan called for "more investment in public safety" to enable recruitment and retainment of quality officers. (Maryland.gov)
- The Prince George's County Council has passed a resolution to extend its indoor mask mandate and declaration of emergency. The resolution cites Oct. 12 data that show the county's infection rate is .97, with a positivity rate of 3.1%. If a retail store, restaurant or business doesn't comply to this mandate, it faces fines up to $1,000 or closure. (WTOP)
- According to Patch reporter Michelle Rotuno-Johnson, high school seniors in Prince George's County can apply for a scholarship if they plan to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and/or math (STEM) fields. The Innovation Scholarship Program will provide up to 30 cash scholarships for graduating seniors in the county who commit to STEM majors in 4-year, 2-year, or registered apprenticeship programs. The applicant must be a resident of Prince George's County their senior year, and attend school in the county. (Patch)
