Laurel, Maryland… The Laurel Historical Society (LHS) has extended the application deadline for McCeney Scholarships to July 1, 2017. The two $750 scholarships for graduating Laurel-area high school students are designed to “to encourage members of Laurel's younger generations to pursue the study of history.” Scholarships are open to seniors graduating in 2017 who live in and/or attended a high school in one of the following ZIP codes: 20707, 20708, 20709, 20723, 20724, 20725, and 20726. Scholarship winners will be notified August 1, 2017. They are named for long-time Laurel Historical Society Chairman, President, and Treasurer and active Laurel community member James "Jim" McCeney, who passed away in 2016.

According to the LHS, the two McCeney Scholarships in the amount of $750 will be awarded annually to Laurel area high school students who have demonstrated sustained excellence and commitment in the discipline of social studies and who intend to continue to pursue those interests at college or university.

“Jim McCeney was a tireless pillar of the community dedicated to preserving and promoting Laurel’s history. His loss is keenly felt and our goal is to honor him by encouraging local students to take up the banner of history for Laurel.“ stated Executive Director, Lindsey Baker
