Mosquito Spraying In Laurel This Weekend After West Nile Case

From the City of Laurel: Traces of West Nile Virus have been detected in a mosquito caught in a trap near the City of Hyattsville.

As a precaution, the Mosquito Control Section of the Maryland Department of Agriculture is required to spray a radius of three-quarters of a mile that includes some areas of Hyattsville east of 42nd Avenue.

Traps in Laurel have been tested and were not positive.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture has sprayed Laurel twice in June. They did not spray here in July because of the weather and low mosquito counts.

MDA crews are scheduled to spray in Laurel on Sunday, July 29, 2018—depending on the weather and if crews can spray Hyattsville tonight ( July 26th).

The MDA is reminding people that they can reduce the risk of mosquito bites by using repellent, avoiding standing water, and wearing clothes that covers your skin.

If you are bitten by a mosquito and experience signs and symptoms such as a headache, fever, weakness, and/or disorientation, please be sure to contact a medical professional immediately.
