Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- Maryland University of Integrative Health recently welcomed award-winning author Amy Riolo as Brand Ambassador. Riolo has written several award-winning and diabetes-friendly cookbooks which focus on both living and eating with pleasure and health in mind in order to promote optimal health. Her cooking and writing draw from traditional wisdom and contemporary science. She will join MUIH's distinctive community of scholars, researchers, practitioners, and advocates to promote whole person, relationship-centered healthcare and nutrition. (WFMZ Allentown)
- Laurel High School will be holding a vaccine clinic for kids ages 5 to 11 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on select Mondays Walk-ins are welcome, but people are encouraged to schedule an appointment. For additional mobile clinics, check the county's clinic locator. Monday Clinics: Nov. 8, Nov. 15, Nov. 22 (First-Dose Clinic); Nov. 29, Dec. 6, Dec. 13th (Second-Dose Clinic). (Washingtonian)
- R. Larry Johnson's homebred 2-year-old colt Mr Jefferson outran Bold Leader and that resulted in giving trainer Mike Trombetta his 2,000th career victory in Thursday's featured eighth race at Laurel Park. Ridden by Mychel Sanchez, Mr Jefferson completed about 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.43 over a fast main track to win the optional claiming allowance for juveniles by 1 ½ lengths. Trombetta is the second Maryland-based trainer to reach a career milestone at Laurel this fall. (laurelpark.com)
- The death of her daughter, who was killed 11 years ago while on a bicycle in Prince George's County, is always with Kenniss Henry. In 2010, Natasha Pettigrew was training for a triathlon when she was hit by a car on Route 202, in Largo. She died two days later, at the age of 30. Regional police and safety officials said the goal of the Street Smart program is to identify and change unsafe behavior patterns for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. (WTOP)
- Governor Larry Hogan recently accepted the final certified legislative and congressional maps submitted by the Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission and transmitted them to the Maryland General Assembly. Gov. Hogan also signed a proclamation calling for a special session of the General Assembly beginning Dec. 6 for the purpose of acting on the commission's maps. (Maryland.gov)

- Prince George's County Police: At our Crossing Guards Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, Chief Aziz officially retired Ms. Bertie Harley, who passed away in March of 2020. At the time of her death, she was still an active guard with more than 48 years of service. Mrs. Harley's son and her family attended the event in her honor. She is greatly missed. (Instagram)
- City of Laurel - Government: COVID VACCINE ALERT! Children between ages 5-11 can start receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Prince George's County has set up mobile clinics at 15 high school including Laurel High School, that start Nov. 8. (Facebook)
