PGCPS BOE Crisis + Black Lawyer/Black Client Referral Service

Welcome to the Laurel Daily, your go-to for updates on all things Laurel.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Alexis Goring, your host of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather: Possible light rain in the evening. High: 93 Low: 71.

Here are the top stories in Laurel today:

1. The Prince George's County Board of Education is in crisis. The panel, which is made up of nine elected and four appointed members, is experiencing conflict and is divided into factions. There is deep mistrust and a feeling of grievance all around. (WTOP)

2. Kisha A. Brown created a new organization called Justis Connection. It is a referral service linking Black lawyers with Black clients. Already, she has built a database of about 950 Black lawyers across multiple disciplines in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. — and she hopes to have national listings well under way by the end of the year. (WTOP)

3. President Biden has nominated Prince George's County Del. Erek Barron to become the next U.S. Attorney for Maryland. If confirmed, he would be the first Black person to hold the post, and the first Democrat in 20 years. Barron, 47, has a direct tie to Biden: He worked as his counsel and policy adviser when Biden was a U.S. Senator from 2007 to 2009, and on the Obama-Biden transition team's justice and civil rights review team. (WTOP)
