Police Release Name Of Pedestrian Killed In Maryland City

A Potomac driver fatally struck a man who walked into traffic on MD-198 near Laurel/Maryland City, police say.

MARYLAND CITY, MD — A Potomac driver fatally struck a man who walked into traffic on MD-198 near Laurel/Maryland City. The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Laurel Ft. Meade Road near Laureldale Drive. The driver of a westbound 2010 Acura MDX didn't see the pedestrian who walked into westbound traffic in an apparent attempt to cross the roadway, authorities say.

The driver — James W. Seach, 63, of the 9400 block of Eldwick Way in Potomac — was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. Seach stopped and called 911, say Anne Arundel County Police.

The pedestrian — Arnold Wilfred Mumford, 65, of no fixed address — was declared dead at the scene by Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Seach was not injured.

Investigators say the preliminary cause of the crash appears to be pedestrian error.
