Popular D.C. Area Gathering Place Expands + Flu Shot Advice 2021

Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- Harris Teeter announced Tuesday that it is selling its Hunter Farms dairy processing plant in High Point. The Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association has the property at 1900 N. Main St. under contract to purchase, and the sale is expected to close Aug. 30, according to Danna Robinson, communications manager for the Matthews-based Harris Teeter supermarket chain. (Yahoo News)
- Busboys and Poets has become a place of gathering for people from all across the D.C. area, and it plans to bring the same sense of community to Columbia (Maryland), with a location in the downtown Merriweather District. Andy Shallal, the owner of Busboys and Poets, said the Columbia location will be all about adding to the multicultural landscape. (WTOP)
- Prince George's County officials have launched a new web portal for patients who receive county health services to better access and manage their records. The MyChart online portal that debuted Wednesday seeks to give patients a more comprehensive way to view their electronic medical records and see customized reports built from their personal data. - According to the Centers for Disease Control, the United States has seen record low numbers of flu cases during the COVID-19 pandemic. But with the risk of the Delta variant and the start of flu season on the horizon, health experts are warning people to get their flu shot before it's too late. CVS MinuteClinics across the state of Maryland will begin offering flu shots as the start of the flu season grows closer. (WDVM)
- Gov. Larry Hogan announced a COVID-19 vaccine mandate Wednesday for all Maryland nursing home and hospital employees. Employees must get their first vaccinations by Sept. 1 or undergo regular COVID-19 testing. The mandate would affect 227 nursing homes across Maryland. Hogan said on average, nearly 80% of nursing home staff are vaccinated, but less than half the staff at some facilities are vaccinated. (WYPR)
