Proposed PGCPS Building Closures Surprise Staff, Students

Staff and students with PGCPS were surprised to learn that two buildings are on the chopping block according to the CEO's proposal.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A budget proposal from Prince George's County Public Schools CEO Monica Goldson appears to call for the consolidation of the county's alternative school, dropping from five buildings down to three. Staff and students were surprised by the news when approached by Fox 5 DC.

The schools that would be consolidated under the plan are Tall Oaks Vocational High School in Bowie and Community Based Classroom, known as CBC, in Lanham.

Jade Mason, who attends CBC, told Fox 5 she just found out about the consolidation plan last week.

"I was really shocked. Out of all the public schools I’ve been to, CBC is the last school I would close," she said. "It’s so versatile and flexible. They work with you."

At Thursday’s school board meeting, several CBC staffers spoke out against the proposal during public comment. Read what they had to say here.
