Second McCeney March September 23

Laurel, MD...Saturday September 23 the Laurel Historical Society (LHS) will hold its second annual “McCeney March” through Historic Laurel. Held in memory of former LHS Board Chair and President Jim McCeney, the event will raise funds for a scholarship for students interested in history and to benefit the Laurel Historical Society. Jim walked every day for many years and the three-mile walk will include some of his favorite routes in Historic Laurel.

Elianna Schiffrick, recipient of the first McCeney Scholarship, is scheduled to also be on hand. Elianna is a resident of Laurel who graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. While at Good Counsel, Elianna took part in many social studies related activities including a trip to El Salvador where she learned the history of the Salvadorean Civil War and explored sites related to that history. She was also Captain of the high school’s Public Forum Debate Team, which required significant research on the history of each issue they debated.

“Elianna’s significant interest in history and status as a Laurel resident made her the perfect fit for the McCeney Scholarship. We are very excited to have her join us for the 2nd Annual McCeney March in honor of Jim. Having her here will be an inspiration, and remind walkers that their participation supports a real person.” stated LHS Executive Director Lindsey Baker.

The walk will start at the Laurel Historical Society 817 Main Street in Laurel. Pre-Registration is $10 for children under 18, $20 for adults a $50 for a family registration – 4 persons of any age. Day-of registrations is $25 for individuals, $55 for a family registration.-Shirts will be available to pre-registrants, but not guaranteed for day-of registrants. Materials pickup and day-of registration begins at 8:30 am and the walk begins at 9:00. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for the event.
