Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Maryland-National Capital Park Police is going 'purple' for it. Over the past few years, the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George's County and Park Police have raised and donated thousands of dollars for the Prince George's County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center. This year, M-NCPPC Park Police, Prince George's County Division, is hosting a "Shatter the Silence" event to help stop domestic violence. (Press Release Desk )
- Last Friday, more than 300 University of Maryland students and residents from nearby neighborhoods gathered on the campus to oppose a proposed townhouse development in a wooded area near the College Park campus. The "Save Guilford Woods" rally targeted a plan to turn university-owned land over to a private developer in order to build housing for 300 graduate students — and 81 market-rate townhouses. University officials see the proposal as a chance to begin to meet the campus' desperate need for graduate student housing. But many members of the community think the plan is a bad idea that is will work against the university's mission to combat climate change. (WTOP)
- Governor Larry Hogan recently announced a $150 million Re-Fund The Police Initiative to provide support and resources to state and local police agencies in their efforts to fight violent crime. This initiative is the first in a series of announcements the governor will make to support the police and make neighborhoods safer. (Maryland.gov)
