The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Laurel.

(Patch Media)

Morning, neighbors! Alexis Goring here with a fresh Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

A shower and thunderstorm. High: 71 Low: 38.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

  1. A diverse and accomplished group of University of Maryland students that includes musicians, athletes, scientists in training, humanitarians and entrepreneurs will serve as Winter 2021 senior marshals, ushering graduating Terps into the commencement ceremony to be held on Dec. 20. The senior marshal program recognizes graduating Terps who demonstrate the highest levels of scholarship, service, extracurricular activity and personal growth. The 32 students honored this semester are August and December 2021 graduates. They were nominated by faculty and staff members, and chosen by a committee. (Maryland Today)
  2. Governor Larry Hogan recently announced new awardees for six state revitalization programs administered by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Nearly $63 million was awarded to 214 projects and activities that promote community development and economic growth. Gov. Hogan said, "Our state revitalization programs spur economic growth in Maryland's diverse and vibrant communities, attracting additional public, private, and nonprofit investment while improving quality of life for residents." (Maryland.gov)
  3. Sports bets can now be placed legally in Maryland. The new sports book at National Harbor has room for about 350 to 400 sports fans to drink and dine and watch the sports they wager on. Governor Larry Hogan, Prince George's County Councilman Calvin Hawkins and Washington Football Team emissary Joe Theismann cast the ceremonial first wagers at MGM National Harbor. (WTOP)
