1. Woman calls Montgomery County Police to home to remove snake after animal control was unavailable (washingtontimes.com) — An elderly resident in Montgomery Village called police for help when a two-foot snake turned up under her bed and animal control couldn't come until the next day. A Montgomery County officer safely removed the snake and released it outdoors, with no injuries reported. The department later shared bodycam video of the unusual late-night call.
2. Parents to get a look at Montgomery County Public Schools study on closing, consolidating elementary/middle schools (wtop.com) — Montgomery County Public Schools are studying whether to close or consolidate some elementary and middle schools, a move that could affect families in Montgomery Village. With enrollment down more than 9,000 students since 2019, officials will hold in-person and virtual meetings starting Oct. 19 and run a survey through Nov. 4 before making recommendations early next year.
3. Montgomery County Adds 75 Early Head Start Seats for Infants and Toddlers (mocoshow.com) — Families in Montgomery Village may soon find it easier to secure high-quality infant and toddler care, as Montgomery County is funding 75 new Early Head Start seats through community-based child care programs. The expansion, backed by more than $677,000 for FY 2027, will provide screenings, health and mental health support, nutrition services, and family engagement to strengthen early development.
4. MCPS Draft Calendars Include Built-In Snow Make-Up Days and Virtual Learning Option (mocoshow.com) — Montgomery Village families could soon get school calendars two years at a time, as MCPS reviews draft schedules for the 2027–28 and 2028–29 years. The proposals build in spring snow make-up days and allow virtual learning during severe weather, with public feedback open through November before a final Board of Education vote on November 19, 2026.
5. More Than $2.7 Million in State Funding Approved for Montgomery County Projects (mocoshow.com) — More than $2.7 million in new state grants is headed to Montgomery County projects that can benefit residents in communities like Montgomery Village, from affordable housing and early learning to arts and workforce training. Funding will support groups such as Housing Unlimited, Cross Community, Olney Theatre Center, BioHub Maryland, MAS Maryland, A Wider Circle, and Metropolitan Washington Ear.
