Head of Seneca Academy Visits School in India

Dr. Brooke Carroll is establishing a system for Darnestown teachers and students to work with peers in India.

Students and teachers at Seneca Academy may soon be able to work with peers from a school in India through a “buddy-classes” system.

Dr. Brooke Carroll, head of Seneca Academy in Darnestown, recently traveled to India to establish a relationship with Akal Academy in Baru Sahib, Himachal Pradesh. Carroll provided workshops and support for teachers and students at Akal Academy while she was visiting.

Seneca Academy is the only International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program in an independent school in Montgomery County.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with students, teachers and administrators in another country,” Carroll said in a news release. “As an International Baccalaureate Primary years Program World School, we promote international-mindedness, which means we encourage our students to be open-minded, principled, knowledgeable thinkers and communicators. We promote being risk-takers.”

“Akal Academy has developed a curriculum that is similar to ours, with similar goals for their students,” Carroll said. “Enabling Seneca Academy students to interact with Indian students half a world away who are studying similar units will be priceless. I’m also always happy to support schools who are implementing this wonderful IB program.”

Carroll is currently working on “buddy-classes” between the two schools where students and teachers can communicate via email and Skype. Seneca Academy is already connected to a school in Wasilla, AK. Carroll has hopes to establish relations with a school in South America soon.
