MoCo Housing Agency Brings Computers to Low-Income Families
The Housing Opportunities Commission Connects program brings affordable laptops to low-income families.
Technology today is being used in the workforce and in classrooms, but computers do not come cheap.
The Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County launched HOC Connects on Wednesday, a program that will bring computer technology to low-income families.
“We are thrilled to unveil this program today,” said HOC Chair Roberto Piñero, according to a press release. “It is the first of its kind nationally and will ensure that the families we serve are able to compete, both in the workforce and the classroom.”

The agency partnered with CDW and Acer, Inc. to design robust, custom laptops for participants at an affordable price. Residents of Stewartown Homes in Gaithersburg will participate in the pilot program this summer and have access to interest-free loans for the computers with monthly payments between $20-30.
“HOC Connects has the potential to transform the lives of our clients,” said HOC Executive Director Stacy Spann. “It’s hard to be successful without a high degree of computer proficiency, and HOC Connects will really position these families for greater success and self-sufficiency.”

An orientation for participants with computer training will be held in early August. The agency hopes to expand the program to the rest of its clients by the end of the year.
