MoCo Student Has a Chance to Win $25K
Eighth-grader Katherine Wu from Takoma Park Middle School is a finalist in a national science challenge.

Eighth-grade student Katherine Wu, 13, of North Potomac, has made it to the top 10 in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Wu is competing with a chance to win $25,000.
Wu submitted a video to the contest, introducing her invention and solution to an everyday problem. She created a device that warns drowsy drivers of unsafe driving behaviors in an effort to combat accidents.
As a finalist, Wu worked with 3M scientist Dr. Jessee Miller as part of a summer mentorship program.

On Oct. 13 and 14, Wu will present a final version of her invention during the final competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, MN.
The winner of the competition will not only walk away with $25,000, but also a student adventure trip to a destination such as Costa Rica and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
