Save the Date: Silver Spring Jazz Festival

Just because Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer doesn’t mean that summer fun is quite over.
Mark your calendar for the free, 11th Annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. downtown at Veterans Plaza, 1 Veterans Place, in the Silver Spring Civic Building.
The festival brings a combination of various jazz genres, including smooth, Latin, and other popular jazz forms, according to My Montgomery Community Media. Headlining the festival this year is New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Other performances include funk and R&B from Elliott Levine, who has opened for Brian McKnight, world music from David Bach Consort, and a mix from the Jazz Academy of Music in Silver Spring.

Preservation Hall was founded in 1961 with a goal to promote the originality and authenticity of New Orleans jazz, according to the news outlet. Original members included George Lewis, Kid Thomas Valentine and Sweet Emma Barrett. In more recent years, the band has performed and recorded with groups such as My Morning Jacket, Tom WAits, Merle Haggard, Pete Seeger and the Del McCoury Bluegrass Band.
Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation. The Silver Spring Metro stop off the Red Line is two blocks away from the festival. Limited parking is available in the Wayne Avenue garage, Town Square garage and garages on Bonifant Street, Cameron at Ramsey Avenue and Cameron at Fenton Street.

- Elliott Levine at 4:30 p.m.
- David Bach Consort at 5:45 p.m.
- Marcus Johnson presents the Urban Jam Band at 7 p.m.
- Preservation Hall Jazz Band at 8:30 p.m.
