Silver Spring Man Given 60-Year Sentence for Attempted Murder, Burglary

The man received the sentence after being found guilty on three counts.

A Silver Spring man was sentenced on Thursday to 60 years in prison for attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend, according to authorities.

Craig Smith, 48, of Woolen Oaks Court was found guilty of three counts on July 11 for attempted first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree assault, the Montgomery County State Attorney’s office said.

Official documents say Smith tried to kill his ex-girlfriend, Nancy Lea Bise, at her home in Gaithersburg in Aug. 2013. Bise suffered multiple stab wounds.

Montgomery County Circuit Judge David Boynton sentenced Smith to 40 years on the attempted murder charge and 20 years for the burglary charge.

A 20-year sentence for the assault charge was merged with the attempted murder sentence, the state attorney’s office said in a news release.
