Swerving Truck Jumps Tracks, Careens into Overpass

Wayward driver swerved to avoid an unidentified object in the road.

An out-of-control truck forced CSX to temporarily shut down rail operations on Sunday night after the truck’s driver jumped the curb in front of in Olde Towne Gaithersburg, and careened onto the tracks before slamming into the Rte. 355 overpass.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the 1999 Chevrolet was heading westbound on East Diamond Avenue when the driver swerved left to avoid an unidentified object in the road, went down the grass embankment and veered into a concrete wall as he tried to get off the railroad, said Officer Dan Lane, spokesman for the Gaithersburg Police Department. The driver escaped significant injury and was taken to a hospital for a checkup, Lane said.

No one else was in the truck and no charges have been filed, Lane said. The accident forced CSX to shut down train service while police cleared the scene.
