Unbeaten Streak Goes to Five for Boys' Lax

Wolverines take down Northwest 10-6, propelled by five goals from Shane Soghomonian.

Watkins Mill boys’ lacrosse scored early and often then held on for a 10-6 win over the visiting Northwest Jaguars on Thursday —a "sloppy" win that runs the Wolverines’ undefeated season to five games.

Senior Kyle Khuen opened the game with a quick score, which Northwest promptly countered. Watkins Mill’s answer came 20 seconds later on a goal from midfielder Sergio Mosquera. Shane Soghomonian followed that with a pair of goals less than a minute apart. Paul Gianfrancesco score two minutes later to bring the Wolverines' first-quarter tally to five.

Northwest Coach Dave Hafer then made several defensive adjustments that, combined with a strong performance by first-time goalie Skyler Radis, slowed Watkins Mill’s attack for the rest of the game.

"They stuck tough, and that’s how our schedule is going to be pretty much for the rest of the season,"  said Watkins Mill Coach Randy Thompson. "Northwest played defense tremendously well after the first six minutes of the game. They were actually the better team after the first six minutes. But at this point, a win’s a win."

The Wolverines now have as many wins this season as they did over the three previous seasons combined. While Thompson takes pride in the resurgence, he said the team will need to be far more organized when they host rival Clarksburg tonight at 7 p.m.

"We played sloppy. I don’t want to take anything away from the guys, but we need to play better or a disciplined Clarksburg team will beat us," Thompson said.

Clarksburg is 4-1 on the season, their only loss coming against a formidable Quince Orchard squad. The Wolverines and Coyotes have played two mutual opponents this year: Northwood and Einstein.

Watkins Mill beat Northwood 10-0 and Einstein 11-3. Clarksburg beat Northwood 6-5 and Einstein 6-0.
