Wolverines are Division 4 Champs

With boys taking first and girls second, Watkins Mill swimmers outpace Einstein and Clarksburg for their first division title since 2008.

With only one loss all season, the Watkins Mill boys and girls swim teams combined to claim the Division 4 Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the Olney Swim Center.

"We had some good workouts at practice the past few weeks," said Wolverines head coach Bryan Clark. "I toned it down last week but I told them two weeks ago what events they’d be in so they could focus on those events. They did everything I asked them to do."

That focus paid dividends for the team as their 821 total points earned during the competition was enough to withstand the 808 points from Einstein. Clarksburg swimmers and divers rounded out the top three with 660 combined points.

Standouts from the Watkins Mill team included freshman Caroline Hanson’s first-place finishes in the 100 Yard Free and 50 Yard Free, junior Kelly Lewis in the 100 Yard Breast and the Boys 200 Yard Free Relay Team consisting of freshman Alec Van BronkHorst, sophomore Michael Parra, junior Evan Brophy, and senior Nick Lechner.

Though the Lady Wolverines suffered their first defeat of the season, as their 405 points left them in second place behind Einstein girls’ 425 points, the boys were able to get revenge for their only loss this season – a one-point defeat to Clarksburg.

"I’m happy for the boys," said Clark. "We told them [it was] one point that separated us, so they were really motivated coming into this."

The loss was the first for the Clarksburg boys at a competition since the ’08-’09 season. Watkins Mill, Einstein and Clarksburg each won six events, though the Wolverines had eight second-place finishes compared to Titan’s five and Coyote’s three.

The overall victory for the Wolverines was not surprising for the school, either. They had their sights set on a victory all along.

"That was the goal at the beginning of the year," Clark said. "They believed in themselves and we did the scoring ahead of time and we needed to get our personal best in a lot of events. They were able to respond and do that."
