Baltimore Closer to Appointing New Police Commissioner

Committee approves of Kevin Davis appointment as police commissioner; council still has to vote.

Baltimore’s appropriations committee approved of the appointment of Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis as the police commissioner Wednesday night, despite reported protests in City Hall.

With the committee’s approval of Davis as commissioner, the City Council must vote on the appointment. A date for the vote has not been set, according to ABC 2 News.

Davis was named interim police commissioner in July after Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake released then commissioner Anthony Batts, calling his presence in the administration a “distraction” after the unrest.

At least one council member does not approve of the decision to appoint Davis as the next commissioner.

According to WBAL, Councilman Nick Mosby issued a statement indicating it would not be prudent to approve the contract for Davis since the mayor has announced she will not seek reelection after this term.
