Baltimore Police Commissioner Calls for Peaceful Demonstrations After Dallas Shootings

Baltimore Commissioner Kevin Davis says: 'It is up to all of us, collectively, to ensure a safe environment.'

Baltimore, MD — In the wake of the police shootings in Dallas that left five officers dead and several others injured, Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis is asking citizens to maintain peace in Charm City.

"Protests are scheduled in Baltimore for today," Davis said in a statement Friday afternoon.

There is a demonstration planned for 6 to 7:30 p.m. in McKeldin Square (Pratt at Light streets). According to host organization Peoples Power Assembly, the purpose of the rally is to "demand justice for Alton Sterling and for all victims of police terror from Baton Rouge to Baltimore."

Police are aware and ask for people to remain peaceful.

"We must not confuse peaceful protest with violent crime. The crime in Dallas is not representative of the overwhelmingly peaceful protests we frequently facilitate in Baltimore," Davis said. "As we have done throughout the past year, we will work to protect protesters' First Amendment rights. The safety of our officers and protesters is paramount."
