From Happy Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon

I never smell the spice and tang of freshly pulled cedar, without seeing my small sister and myself racing up through Saint John’s churchyard on a gray afternoon, at the end of the year, and stopping just inside the church door, to watch the men and women of the parish trim the reverend building for the oncoming festival of Christmas...How like the woods the church smelled!

From A Victorian Village by Lizzette Woodworth Reese

Volunteers from Waverly Main Street and Waverly Fire House wove up and down Greenmount Avenue today with a ladder, hanging wreathes from the lampposts on very busy sidewalks and streets, while greeting and being greeted by merchants and shoppers along the way.

Shop windows displayed holiday colors, lights, ornaments, stuffed Santa’s and Christmas trees and everyone seemed full of good cheer. The 32nd Street Farmers‘ Market was fast moving into its Winter Season. Saint Johns stood steadfast as the same pastoral peaceful place it has been for 150 years. Waverly has shed most but not all of its autumn leaves. Raven’s purple and black proudly share window space with holiday green, gold, red and silver. Overstuffing on Thanksgiving didn’t seem to put a dent in Pete’s Grill trade.

The former country Victorian Village, now urban hip North central crossroads of town is doing brisk business despite the general hard economic times and on Saturday December 10 will be hosting a Wish Upon Waverly celebration around the Waverly Main Street office at 427 and 1/2  Merryman Lane to which everyone is invited and urged to bring an ornament, decorate the community Christmas tree and sing John Lennon together!

And on that day, too, all are welcome to St. Johns in the Village for its annual Christmas Bazaar.
