Space For Missing Voices: There's More To North Baltimore Than What You Hear

Some people's stories and perspectives in North Baltimore are being overlooked. I intend to shine a spotlight on the fuller picture of this part of the city.

I've long debated about whether or not to begin a blog on this site.  Like most of you, my list of daily tasks and projects is long and at times unyielding.  Weekends have just about evaporated and in the place of regular and lengthy rest and relaxation, I've learned to carve out moments in each day for personal "pit stops."

I have enough to do.

However, I've been increasingly sensitized to the reality that there are voices and perspectives that are missing from the regular conversations that are lifted up in North Baltimore.  While some stakeholders are regularly at the table discussing the news or making the news of the day, there is clearly a class of folks on the margin whose stories are not being told.

I am blessed to hear a great diversity of stories and perspectives given my role as a pastor of a North Baltimore Church.  I regularly hear and share life with those who are never invited to the mic, those who are overlooked by elected officials and shunned by the well-to-do.

Though marginalized, their stories are just as important and precious.  I hope to help create space here for the different news and alternative views that help make up North Baltimore City.

I also hope to share a view of North Baltimore from "below."  While this part of the city often touts develoment at Belvedere Square and the presence of high-powered universities, all that glitters is not gold.  There's some truth-telling that needs to happen.

You won't always agree with what I write here.  My aim is not full agreement.  My objective is to share stories that will sometimes enhance your understanding and other times challenge your worldview.

Yes, I'm a pastor, but don't hestitate to engage me on the issues.   We can do so in a passionate and at the same time civil way.  This is just one small way that I wish to do my part - not to tear Baltimore down, but to lift this magnificent city up!

I'm excited about this journey and I look forward to sharing, learning, and growing together!
