has reported that Baltimore City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke and state Del. Mary Washington are asking for a nuisance abatement hearing (also known as a “padlock" hearing) in an effort to close the Yau Bros. Carryout on Greenmount Avenue at least until the owners of the restaurant hire security to patrol the location.
What a total misuse of the nuisance abatement law. The nuisance abatement program is designed to rid communities of troublesome residents and businesses. The Yau Bros. Carryout is doing nothing but trying to serve Chinese food to customers. The nuisance is the people that come there and commit the crimes.
Requiring the Yau Bros. to add security may be a feel good move, but it would not deter problems at this location. The criminals are shooting people at Yau Bros. Why does anyone think they wouldn't shoot a security guard? And, if you really want to add fuel to the fire, allow Yau Bros. to hire armed security guards. Of course the community will protest as soon as one of the criminals is wounded or shot dead by an armed security guard at the restaurant.

No, the problem is not the restaurant. The problem is that the criminals in Baltimore City are running wild. If padlocking Yau Bros. Chinese Carryout will help to deter criminals than we should go one step further and padlock the entire City of Baltimore. Does that sound reasonable? Of course not. Either does padlocking Yau Bros. Closing the carryout will do nothing to reduce crime in the community and will only hurt those law abiding citizens who enjoy purchasing the Yau Bros. products.
