I treated myself this St. Patrick’s Day to go hear Rabbi Simcha Weinstein, recently voted “New York’s Hippest Rabbi,” discuss his bestselling book, Up, Up, and Oy Vey: How Jewish History, Culture, and Values Shaped the Comic Book Superhero at the Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM), where ZAP! POW! BAM! is the featured exhibit running through the summer.
Nestled between two old synagogues which can be toured during museum hours, JMM is down by Altman’s off old Corn Beef Row and has its own free surface parking lot on Lloyd Street.

Go just to learn the story of how out-of-work Jewish writers and illustrators found jobs in the marginalized comic book industry in the 1930s as the Nazis were coming to power and went on to develop superheroes to lead us into battle against the Axis Powers.
Bring the kids who can change into costumes inside an old phone booth.
I didn’t know that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman and picked up my copy of Rabbi Weinstein’s book in which he inscribed “Be Super!” to find out more.
