CareFirst to "Toss their Boss" from Hyatt Regency for Kidney Disease Awareness

Healthcare insurer participating in NKF-MD's Rappel for Kidney Health signature fundraiser

LUTHERVILLE, Md. CareFirst BlueCross Blue Shield is going to new heights to help end kidney disease.

The healthcare insurer is sending vice president, Greg Miller, “over the edge” of the Hyatt Regency Baltimore for the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland (NKF-MD)’s seventh annual Rappel for Kidney Health signature event, taking place, June 24 & 25.

As the exclusive rappel event occurring annually in the Baltimore metropolitan area, Rappel for Kidney Health invites people of all ages to scale down the 15-story building, from the roof to the sidewalk.

For the second year in a row, the event will offer the Toss Your Boss Challenge in which employees can raise funds for the privilege of having their boss rappel.

Because kidney disease is a major health crisis in the state and the country - affecting 26 million people and one in nine Marylanders – CareFirst has been a long-time supporter of NKF-MD and Rappel for Kidney Health sponsor.

Now they’re taking it a step further by “tossing” Miller, who joined the NKF-MD board of directors earlier this year. The Ellicott City resident is eager to take on the Rappel for Kidney Heath challenge “to further advocate for kidney disease.”

He has set up a fundraising website and started planning a company event to raise awareness about the disease and secure funds from co-workers, and started building on his legacy as “an adventure seeker.”

“I love to push myself to stay very active – having participated in tandem sky diving, taken weeklong biking trips of 500 miles, run multiple marathons, traveled for skiing trips and hiked up the four highest peaks in the continental United States,” he said. “I am really looking forward to this event as I have never rappelled from a peak this high up before.”

In preparation, Miller will undergo a training session on event day. Once in action, he’ll be photographed as he descends from the hotel.

Event proceeds will help NKF-MD expand its patient services, education and research efforts. Through the years, Rappel for Kidney Health events have drawn more than 530 participants and raised over $676,000.
