Doors Open Baltimore: A Sneak Peek Inside Some of Baltimore's Most Interesting Buildings

A citywide event of Baltimore Architecture Month, sponsored by AIABaltimore and the Baltimore Architecture Foundation, with the support of Free Fall Baltimore.

On Saturday, October 25, Baltimore Architecture Month will host the first ever Doors Open Baltimore. This one-day free event welcomes the public to tour buildings or parts of buildings not typically open to the public, including the Phoenix Shot Tower, the Latrobe Spring House at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore Design School, Mill No. 1 and dozens of other locations throughout the city, from Locust Point to Mount Washington.

According to AIA Baltimore Executive Director Kathleen Lane, “Doors Open” events like this take place in cities across the world to promote heritage and enhance public appreciation of architecture and the built environment around us. “We’re proud to be joining the ranks of cities like Denver and Toronto in bringing Doors Open to Baltimore for the first time,” says Lane.

This year’s theme is Industrial Baltimore, with more than 40 locations selected that are connected to Baltimore’s industrial heritage or showcase industrial buildings adapted to new uses today. In addition to opening their doors, many sites will be offering special programs for visitors, such as guided tours. To kick off Doors Open Baltimore, Tom Liebel, FAIA, LEED fellow and author of Images of America: Industrial Baltimore, will be giving a free lecture at the Baltimore Design School about Industrial Baltimore. The lecture will be held on October 23, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. After the lecture, there will be a reception and book signing.
